Medical Terms and the Language of Medicine

Medical words aren’t nearly as difficult as you might think. They all have a root, a suffix, and a combining vowel. A quick example is cardiogram. Let’s break it down:

Cardiogram : [root] Cardi being a word that pertains to the heart, though the combining vowel is usually seen, such is the case of “Cardio.”
Cardiogram : [combining vowel] The combining vowel, o, is seen here.
Cardiogram : [suffix] gram relates to a record.

When you put all the words together, cardiogram means a record of the heart. Cardio (heart) gram (record).
