Draft Script for Florida Shooting Discussion Video

First, I really hope the death penalty comes into play, although that would be a little too easy. Currently, there are 348 offenders on death row in Florida. What I really wish for would be that this man be kept alive and in good health so that each parent, guardian, or family member could be placed in a room with this monster and beat him to within an inch of his life. Let him heal up and just do it again. That would be true justice.

An article released in October of 2017 on Live science.com discusses how experts are calling for mass killers’ names to not be released. 147 experts, including psychologists, criminologists and other human behaviour experts penned and signed a letter asking media to stop naming the evil people. This is in large part due to many research studies conducted that show a large motivating factor in mass shootings and other acts of extreme violence on large scales is notoriety.

In fact, studies are showing that narcissism is on the rise, which is not too shocking considering the culture of selfies, vlogs, and well… Here we are. YouTube. The rise in narcissism and the desire to be famous are some of I’m sure many key factors in what is causing the rise in these horrific tragedies.

Dear media, please stop. Naming. The. Gunmen. Stop. Stop giving them fame.

Aside from thoughts and prayers, perhaps Trump could request media news stations not name these men and potentially women. A law isn’t necessarily required, just common sense. Do some research!

Stop naming these insignificant assholes.

Onto the next subject… I understand that this seems lie a good time to discuss gun control, but using the death of children to help perpetuate your stance on gun laws is in very poor taste. It is a discussion that is absolutely necessary… Just be tactful.

A friendly reminder before I move onto the next item: Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work. There is no shortage of street drugs currently. There are no shortages of already banned and illegal weapons. Banning guns might very well decrease the amount of shootings, but it certainly will not eliminate them altogether. In fact, that’s kind of naive to think.

Lastly, this opens a discussion on mental health. Aside from perhaps being depressed, I have not read anywhere that this individual actually had a mental illness. We don’t have to always blame a mental illness. Some people are just terrible human beings.

Actually, it is substance abusers who are the most violent people in our society. In fact, when appropriately treated, those with mental illness are no more a risk than the general public.

Most acts of violence are committed by individuals who are NOT mentally ill.

According to a study published in World Psychiatry, written by Heather Stuart, “The major determinants of violence continue to be socio-demographic and socio-economic factors such as being young, male, and of lower socio-economic status.”
