As luck would have it, the universe once again had alternate plans than what I was hoping for this month. I was extremely motivated and excited about Vlogmas this year. I recorded videos ahead of time and had many in the process of being edited. I recorded a bunch of videos on December 1st and sat down to edit my Vlogmas day 1 for the 2021 season… And found that my external hard drive had died.
I use Final Cut Pro on my Macbook Pro to edit my videos. In order to do this, I require an external hard drive, since my Macbook doesn’t have a lot of working memory and videos in general take up a lot of memory, especially when you are editing them.
December 1st, I sat down with my macbook and external drive to transfer my videos over onto my macbook and start editing, but my Seagate Barracuda Fast SSD (affiliate link, because I can) which I bought from Amazon in July of 2020 did not light up to indicate that it was turned on. I used different ports and I used different cords (USB 3/C) to try and see if there was a hardware issue unrelated to the hard drive, but to no avail. I was not able to access my hard drive because it was simply not turning on.
Unfortunately, this means that I lost all of my videos that I had prepared and I lost out on the ability to actually edit my videos.
I thought maybe I could transfer my video files to my Windows PC, but I do not have a card reader for my PC. My Macbook Pro uses all USB 3.0 ports while my computer only has the classic USB ports. No problem, I will go out and get another hard drive from Best Buy I thought. So I went and bought a new external drive… And the damn thing was setup for Windows 10, which I didn’t see in the description when I was purchasing it. Great. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
I’ll have to take that drive back, but in the mean time I’ll just try to do file sharing between my Macbook and my PC, then I can transfer my video files over that way and start learning how to edit on a windows 10 video editing software. Welp. That was majorly unsuccessful as well. I was not able to get my Macbook to see my Windows 10 machine.
Merry Christmas, Universe, you goddamn Hooligan.
I went to Walmart this time and just bought another Seagate hard drive even though I no longer trust its integrity. I did not read the packaging and accidentally bought a hard drive that has a USB type that is not supported by my macbook.
So… It is now Vlogmas day 8 and I have only put up one single Vlogmas video, which I recorded with my webcam on my Windows PC with awful audio.
I ordered appropriate connector cables to help me with this, but my motivation is caput and the cables won’t be coming anytime soon due to the floods in BC and the Christmas shipping rush. Nice.
